Math students are often unsure about how to tackle a problem or activity that looks unfamiliar. Often they will wait for the teacher or tutor to provide guidance. To develop more independent learning, Literacy Minnesota teacher Lindsey Pust created a reflection sheet that provides a roadmap for tackling math activities.
The worksheet is set up with six steps to guide students through a math problem or worksheet. Students reflect on the problem by answering the following questions.
- Step 1: How does this problem/activity make you feel? Learners reflect on their emotions as they tackle the problem.
- Step 2: What about the problem looks familiar?
- Step 3: What about the problem looks unfamiliar/difficult?
- Step 4: What could you do to help yourself feel more confident when trying to solve these problems?
- Step 5: Try it! Learners apply their strategies and tackle the problem.
- Step 6: How did it go? Learners reflect on what worked, what didn't and what their next steps are.
The reflection sheet can be accessed and downloaded here.
