Worksheet Relay Race

Purpose: Review grammar, vocabulary, or sentence structures and practice writing by using fill-in-the-blank worksheets to create a dynamic team game.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Materials Needed: Several copies of a worksheet, blank pieces of paper.

Procedure:

1. Divide the class into groups of two or three. Pairs can also work if the class is very small.
2. Place the copies of the worksheet at the front of the class. Put a pencil next to each worksheet. Give each group a blank piece of paper and a second pencil.
3. When you say “Go,” one learner from each group runs to the front of the room and fills out the first item on their group’s worksheet. The same learner then runs back to their group and writes out the full answer on the blank sheet of paper. If the items on the worksheet are long, only have the learners write out only the relevant portion (e.g. if the worksheet is practicing a verb tense and the item on the worksheet reads “I _____ to the store last night” you could have the learner write out “I went”).
4. As soon as the first learner reaches the sheet of blank paper, the second learner in the group runs to the worksheet at the front of the room and completes the second item. The second learner then runs back to their group and writes out the answer on the blank sheet of paper.
5. Each learner takes turns filling out items and writing them on the blank piece of paper until the worksheet is completed.
6. Go over the worksheet as a class and have the groups check their responses. You may want to allow each group to have “three lives,” which means that they can erase up to three wrong answers and replace them with the right ones.
