Purpose:  Use music to develop listening skills in this interactive activity.

Thanks to Liddy Rich for this tutor tip and for sharing a list of songs for English class! Find it here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1H8DQrRuhwM-CXuau4RGlRVVugGdUf8IXE5nCDJI0Id8/edit?usp=sharing

Preparation Time:  15 minutes

Materials Needed:  A song, sets 10-16 words from the song  and 2-4 words NOT from the song cut apart into individual pieces

Procedure:

  1. Put the learners into partners and give each pair a set of words. Read through the words together as a class.
  2. Tell the learners that they will listen to a song and identify the words that they hear. They will separate the words that they hear in the song from the words that they don’t hear.
  3. Play the song while learners work together to separate the words that they hear in the song from the ones that they don’t hear.
  4. Play the song again and have the learners check that the words are separated correctly (you may need to play a third time depending on the learners).
  5. As a class, identify which words were not in the song.

Modification for Teaching Online: Put up a list of 12-20 words (use more words for higher levels) on the screen and have the learners copy them into their notebooks. Play the song several times, and have the learners check off the words that they hear.
