Have you ever worked with an adult learner for weeks—or even months—and thought, “Something’s just not adding up. Why aren’t they making the progress I expected?” If so, you’re not alone.

In Adult Basic Education (ABE), it can be difficult to understand why a learner may be struggling. The reasons are complex and varied. A learner’s challenges could stem from limited experience with formal education, past or current trauma, a mental health condition, a learning disability, or even an intellectual or developmental disorder. While only qualified professionals can diagnose the latter issues, it’s incredibly helpful for ABE teachers and volunteers to have foundational knowledge and tools for support.

That’s where PANDA—Minnesota ABE’s disability specialist—comes in. The PANDA website offers clear, accessible information on various disabilities along with instructional strategies that can benefit all learners, not just those with diagnosed conditions.

Here are a few pages from their site that are especially useful for volunteers and educators looking to better understand and support their learners:

Each page includes:

  • A basic overview of the condition

  • How it may be identified or diagnosed

  • Common challenges in the classroom

  • Effective instructional strategies

  • Considerations for English Language Learners (ELLs)

  • Additional resources

Whether you’re new to volunteering or a seasoned ABE educator, PANDA is a valuable resource that can help you create a more inclusive, supportive learning environment. And remember: the strategies you use to support one learner often benefit everyone in the room.
