What is Translanguaging?

May 2026

Translanguaging is a term used in language classrooms to describe allowing learners to use their language(s) of comfort while learning a new language. This may include encouraging students to speak, write, and translate to and from their first languages. Research indicates that this practice improves comprehension, increases student engagement, affirms cultural identity, and supports academic achievement in both language and content areas. It is also widely viewed as a culturally responsive and antiracist practice.
