Stop! Watch Out!

 Purpose: To practice asking for and giving advice using the modals “should/shouldn’t” as well as giving quick warnings.

Preparation Time: Five minutes.

Materials: Two blindfolds.

Preparation: Plan to review the use of “should/shouldn’t,” as well as the expressions “Stop!” and “Watch out!” and directions. Set up the classroom as an obstacle course using chairs, tables, waste baskets, and anything else you can find. It might be helpful for the tutor or teacher to take a turn first.

Procedure:

1. Divide the students into two teams and blindfold one member from each team. 
2. Place the team members in a line at the other end of the obstacle course.
3. Spin the blindfolded students and stop them at confusing angles to the course.
4. The blindfolded students ask their teammates for advice on how to get through the obstacle course. They must use closed questions and their teammates can only respond using “should/shouldn’t." For example:
   • A: Should I take one big step forward?
   • B: Yes, you should.
   • A: Now, should I go to the right?
   • B: No, you shouldn’t.
5. If the blindfolded student comes close to an object in the course, the teammates may shout out a warning. If the blindfolded student touches an object, he or she is returned to the beginning of the course.
6. Every once in awhile, alternate the team members who are responding to the blindfolded student, so everyone gets a turn.
7. The team that brings its teammate through the obstacle course first wins.
