Casual, everyday bigotry can happen all around us: at school, at work, even in our families. Knowing how to respond in the moment is a challenge for many people. The Southern Poverty Law Center brought together Americans from all walks of life for a series of roundtable discussions. Participants shared their experiences, and those experiences became the inspiration for Speak Up: Responding to Everyday Bigotry.

People spoke about encounters in stores and restaurants, on streets and in schools. They spoke about family, friends, classmates and co-workers. They told us what they did or didn't say — and what they wished they did or didn't say.

And no matter the location or relationship, the stories echo each other.

This straightforward guide gives concrete recommendations for ways that people can push back against hurtful comments, whether those comments condone or promote racism, homophobia, ableism, ageism or religious discrimination either intentionally or unintentionally. The guide provides suggestions speaking up with compassion and conviction in a wide variety of scenarios, ranging from speaking to loved ones, to standing up to a boss, to confronting a teacher's bias, to addressing racial profiling in retail situations.
