The Introduction to Medical Careers class at Literacy Minnesota is good for you if you are:

  • Interested in working with and helping elderly or people with disabilities.
  • Want to work part-time or full time in hospitals, nursing homes, or patient’s homes.

Introduction to Medical Careers / What to expect:

Personal Care Assistant (PCA) — all participants work through MN Department of Human Services (MN DHS) online certificate program for PCA training.

  • At the completion of the course, participants take an online exam. With passing the exam, participants receive a PCA certificate. The PCA certification allows participants to find employment immediately.
  • The PCA certificate does not expire.
  • Participants will get an email with the certificate.

Pre-Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preparation – learn vocabulary and basic job skills necessary to eventually work as a CNA. This class helps those who are interested in pursuing a CNA to get a general understanding of topics that will be covered in a CNA training course, such as dietary considerations, taking vital signs (blood pressure, temperature), assisting with acts of daily living, learning about Alzheimer’s and Dementia, learning about Infectious Diseases and others.

  • The pre-CNA part of the class will prepare students to enter a CNA certification course, for example at the International Institute of Minnesota (IIMN)
  • Participants do not need to complete the Introduction to Medical Careers class with Literacy Minnesota to attend a CNA certificate program; they can start directly with the IIMN program. For more information see: https://iimn.org/programs/classes-and-job-trainings/
