Maps, Graphs, and Charts in the ABE Classroom
Adult learners entering Minnesota’s Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs often complete standardized placement assessments that measure reading and language skills.
These assessments also require students to find information, compare data, and make conclusions using visuals. Students are asked to demonstrate the kinds of literacy skills they use in everyday life, as well as in academic settings.
Because these visual formats are so common on placement tests, it's important that they become a regular part of classroom instruction. Students benefit from frequent opportunities to work with graphs, charts, maps, and tables in meaningful contexts.
Simple activities such as reading a weather forecast chart, reading and analyzing survey results, or using local maps can help build the confidence and skills needed for testing.
Just as importantly, these activities prepare learners for real world situations where information is often presented visually, rather than in traditional paragraphs.
