Expressing Opinions

Purpose: To give intermediate students practice with the grammar forms “I do, too” and “I don’t either.”

Preparation Time: Two minutes to set up the activity

Materials: None

Preparation: None

Procedure:

1) Divide the class into two teams. Have the teams line up on opposite sides of the room facing each other.

2) Begin with an affirmative or negative statement such as “I like fish” or “I don’t like baseball.”

3) The first student in line on one of the teams either agrees with your opinion and says, “I do, too” or disagrees, using “I don’t either.” They also have the option of changing the sentence to the negative or positive by restating it in its complete form (“I don’t like fish” or “I like fish”).

4) If the student responds correctly, the play passes to the corresponding student on the opposite side, who agrees or disagrees with the last person to speak.

5) Students who make a mistake join the opposite team. Play until one side has a clear majority of students.

Here’s how the process might sound:

Variations:

• For more advanced students, include the forms: “So do/can/am I” and “neither do/can/am I."
