Are you looking for a new source of reading material for your learners? The Change Agent magazine is a great choice for students in Intermediate EL level and above. While there is a paid subscription option, you can also access many articles for free via the Lesson Packets, which are collections of articles that all relate to the same topic of interest to adults, like workplace safety, racism, domestic violence, voting and more. The articles are written by learners, and many of them encourage self-advocacy, and a few include supplementary Google Slide presentations that you can edit or use as-is.

Here are a few Lesson Packet titles:

  • Thinking About Becoming a CNA?
  • Celebrating Freedom on Juneteenth
  • Making Sense of Extreme Inequality
  • Indigenous People’s Issue
  • Teaching About Race in the Adult Ed Classroom
  • What Pushes and What Pulls Immigrants to the US?

See the full list on the Lesson Packets page of the Change Agent website. The articles do not include any activities, but you can approach them the way you normally do any text, or check out Crafting a Reading Lesson on the Spot to get some ideas.

These articles from The Change Agent are bound to generate interesting class discussions, and they’ll get your learners reflecting on how they can improve their lives through civic engagement and self-advocacy.
