Nikki Carson

Lead ESL Teacher

Nikki teaches ESL and College and Career Preparation classes at Open Door Learning Center—Lake St. She joined Literacy Minnesota in 2004 and has over 15 years of teaching experience in a variety of settings. Her passion for literacy sparked when she met siblings from the former Czechoslovakia in the sixth grade. They were new arrivals to her moderately small South Dakota hometown and this is where her adventure in ESL began. In her college days, Nikki held jobs at both her hometown public library and a local bookstore. In 2004, she received a Minnesota ABE Teacher of the Year award from Literacy Action Network. Nikki has served on the Minnesota Numeracy Initiative Advisory Team, ACES, and Literacy and Language Advisory Team. She served as co-Professional Development Regional Coordinator from 2008-2012. She has a BA in English Literature, a MA in TESL, and an ABE license. In her leisure time, she dabbles in knitting, sewing, and gardening. She also enjoys reading mystery books and hanging out with her daughter.
