Brianne Carmichael

Cultural Literacy & Belonging Director

Brianne Carmichael is Literacy Minnesota’s Cultural Literacy & Belonging Director.  She brings a wealth experience and passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion to her role. Previously, Brianne served as a Financial Case Aid for Hennepin County’s Adult Protective Services, demonstrating her commitment to community support and advocacy, as well as, over six years of dedicated service on the Health and Human Services Project Diversity Council, including a term as Chair. Brianne also has background in promoting workers’ rights as she served as union steward and Anti-Discrimination leader within her former AFSCME locals.

On joining Literacy Minnesota in 2022 Brianne wrote, “Literacy for me, is the full integration of persons into broader society. I see literacy as the path to reducing disparities and as a fundamental building block of impactful and lasting change, especially for those that exist within our Indigenous, Black, and Brown communities."

Armed with a BA in English with a concentration in African/American Studies and coursework towards an MA in Leadership & Management, Brianne is dedicated to driving impactful and lasting change. Beyond her professional endeavors, has volunteered as an English Language tutor and actively participates in organizations such as her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Delta Phi Omega Chapter and the Minneapolis NAACP.

Outside of work Brianne finds joy in spending time with her family dogs, Fiona (Shorkie) and Remy (Shih Tzu), indulging in her love for Harry Potter, Hayao Miyazaki's anime, photography, travel, literature, and attending concerts. Brianne's multifaceted interests reflect her vibrant personality and her dedication to embracing life's diverse experiences with openness and curiosity.
