Mariah joined Literacy Minnesota as Volunteer Outreach Coordinator in 2020. She began her career by promoting study abroad programs for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest in Chicago. After volunteering for an adult ESL class, Mariah made an enthusiastic pivot into adult education. She earned her TEFL certificate and moved to Santiago, Chile to teach English for two years. Upon returning to Minnesota, she joined the Hennepin County Library system as an Adult Basic Education Instructor at the Franklin Learning Center. During this time, Mariah discovered the joy of connecting volunteers and students. She believes that welcoming volunteers into ABE is a powerful way to build community and learn collectively. She’s dedicated to working towards volunteerism that’s anti-racist, trauma-informed, and responsive to community needs. Mariah holds a BA in Communication Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College.
Outside of work, Mariah loves walking by the Mississippi River, weaving colorful wall hangings, listening to show tunes, thrifting, spending time with family and friends, and fretting about the well-being of her houseplants.
